Our knowledge of the presence and fate of pesticides in aquatic environments and their toxicity for related organisms is very patchy, particularly in transitional ecosystems such as mangroves.
It aims to assess the health and environmental risks associated with the use of pesticides on islands, and to develop "crab" indicators in the mangroves of Mayotte. The objectives of the project are as follows:
1 - Determine which phytosanitary products or their degradation products are present in the water of selected mangrove ecosystems.
2 - Evaluate whether the main molecules present are bioaccumulated in organisms consumed by the population.
3 - Evaluate the impact of some of these molecules (ie acetamiprid) on ecosystem functioning by studying an engineer species: the fiddler crab Paraleptuca chlorophthalmus and its behavioural and physiological responses facing acetamiprid chronic exposure.
The CRABMAYO project is supported by The French National Research Program for Environmental and Occupational Health of Anses (2020/01/110), including my postdoctoral funding (2022-2024).
